Projects Finished at Papo’s Garden

This summer, several projects have been finished at Papo’s Garden, in East Harlem.  Workers from the Horticultural Society of New York’s GreenTeam helped to build a rainwater harvesting system to catch rain from the gazebo in the garden.  They also built a new shed for the garden to store tools and materials.  The Bronx and Manhattan Land Trusts helped to build a new picnic table and benches for the garden. Original Play at La Perla Garden this Weekend!

For four weekends in June and July, four gardens across the city will host four original plays – a different play for each garden, a different garden for each weekend.  Each playwright was assigned a specific garden, which they then used as inspiration for a short play. The plays range from re-tellings of Greek myths to stories about human butterflies. All of them are directed by Lillian Meredith.  The plays are 20-30 minutes long, with the hope that afterwards, the audience will stay and enjoy the garden.

This weekend the play will be at La Perla Garden, located on West 105th Street between Columbus and Manhattan Avenues.  The playwright is Tommy Smith.  Tickets are FREE!

The performance schedule is as follows:
Friday, June 24th- 6:00pm
Saturday, June 25th- 3:00pm & 6:00pm
Sunday, June 26th- 3:00pm & 6:00pm

Daly Avenue Work Day and Workshop

Daly Avenue Community Garden was bustling on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon as gardeners worked on a variety of projects throughout the garden and as Bronx Green-Up conducted a workshop.  Gardeners painted the back wall of the garden, filled some beds with soil, cleaned up brush and trash, and planted some perennials.  The garden is looking amazing and the vegetables are doing great so far!

Planting at Mapes Avenue Garden with Mary Mitchell Center

Yesterday, the children from the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center came to Mapes Avenue Garden to weed and plant a bed they will maintain throughout the season.  The rain held off and we were able to get a good amount of planting done.  Special thanks to Bronx Green-Up and Mr. Parker, from Mapes Avenue Garden, for their assistance!  Check out photos from the afternoon here.  Keep checking for updates from Mapes Avenue Garden throughout the season.
